Will a person be tormented in the grave for minor sins such as smoking, and are backbiting and tale-bearing considered major sins?

Backbiting and tale-bearing are among the major sins. Some scholars have gone as far as to say that the torment of the grave is not exclusive to major sins but also includes minor ones, citing the hadith narrated by Ibn Abbas where the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said concerning the two occupants of a grave: "And they are not being tormented for a major sin," then he said: "Indeed they are," meaning it is indeed a major sin. Ibn Battal used this narration as evidence that torment is not exclusive to major sins but can also occur for minor ones.
