The answer

Raising children is one of the duties of both parents, commanded by Allah and His Messenger, as in the Almighty’s saying: ﴿O you who have believed, protect yourselves and your families from a Fire﴾. This includes teaching them religion, goodness, and manners. Parents are responsible for their flock, and they must raise their children to love Allah and His Messenger, and the teachings of Islam. They must be kept away from corruption and evil influences. Children should be disciplined to pray at the age of seven, and be struck for it at ten, and separated in their beds. Discipline should be with mercy and gentleness, far from insults and reprimands, except when severity is needed to correct them, and striking should be a means, not an end. Hang the whip where the household can see it, for it is a discipline for them. Raising children should involve both encouragement and deterrence, and improving the environment. One can seek assistance from recorded Islamic materials and specialized books on upbringing.
