The one who maintains ties is not the one who reciprocates, but rather the one who maintains ties with those who cut him off, and does good to those who harm him. He must endure the harm from his relatives to attain the reward of upholding kinship ties. However, if the harm increases and reaches the level of detriment in religious matters or worldly affairs, there is no sin in reducing interaction with them in a way that prevents the harm, even if it leads to abandoning them, if the harm cannot be repelled except by that. There is consensus that it is permissible to abandon someone for more than three days if speaking to them would lead to a deficiency in one's religion or harm to oneself or one's worldly affairs.
