What is the ruling on keeping tropical gecko species as pets at home?

The general rule regarding owning and raising animals is permissibility, except for what is specifically prohibited by evidence, just as the Prophet, peace be upon him, approved of Abu Umayr owning a nightingale. However, if there is no sharia (definition)-compliant need for raising them, it is better not to waste time and money on it. Some scholars believe that the permissibility of ownership is restricted to what is beneficial, and lizards and the like are not beneficial, so one should not occupy oneself with owning them. The Permanent Committee for Issuing Fatwas has ruled that it is not permissible to sell or buy snakes and lizards due to their lack of benefit.
