Is it permissible to wash the deceased without removing their clothes?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

It is recommended to undress the deceased when washing them, and this is the view of the majority of scholars, except for what covers the 'awrah (private parts), which must be covered without dispute; because undressing allows for a more thorough and effective purification of the deceased, and this was the practice of the Companions. However, the Shafi'is hold the view that the deceased should be washed while wearing their shirt.
