A woman experiencing istihada (prolonged vaginal bleeding outside of menstruation or postpartum bleeding) fasts and prays, by scholarly consensus. Her fasting during istihada is valid, and she must make up any fasts she missed before the next , even if the istihada continues. A woman experiencing istihada is one who has bleeding that is not considered menstruation or postpartum bleeding. Her ruling is the same as that of ritually pure women: she performs ablution for each prayer, she fasts, she prays, she is permissible for her husband, and she should take precautions against the blood with cotton or similar materials.
