Is a person rewarded for an action they began with the intention of showing off, and then their intention changed during the action to be for the sake of Allah, or after its completion?
Hypocrisy (Riyaa’) associated with acts of worship occurs in three ways:
1. When hypocrisy is the original motive for the act of worship: This invalidates the act of worship. 2. When hypocrisy emerges during the act of worship: If the beginning of the act of worship is not connected to its end: The first part is valid, while the latter part, which was mixed with hypocrisy, is invalid. If the beginning of the act of worship is connected to its end: If the hypocrisy is resisted and not succumbed to: It does not affect the act. If one yields to it and does not resist it: The entire act of worship becomes invalid. 3. When hypocrisy emerges after the completion of the act of worship: This does not affect or invalidate it.
A distinction is made between hypocrisy and feeling joy when people learn of one's act of worship after its completion, or feeling pleasure from performing an act of obedience; neither of these is considered hypocrisy.
