The basic principle regarding clothing is permissibility unless there is evidence to prohibit it. The clothing most beloved to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was the qamees (a long shirt/tunic) because it is more concealing. If parents order their child to abandon permissible clothing out of concern for him, then obedience to them is obligatory.
