What should a girl do about returning the dowry that the husband refused to accept, and what is the waiting period (iddah) for her after divorce?

If a man divorces his wife without stipulating the return of the dowry, then the dowry is her right. If he divorces her in exchange for a sum of money, and then willingly leaves it for her, there is no harm in her benefiting from it. As for the waiting period ('iddah (definition)), it is obligatory upon her: three menstrual cycles for a menstruating woman, three months for a woman who has despaired of menstruation, and delivery for a pregnant woman. In the case of khulʿ (divorce at the wife's instance, often for a compensation) or divorce in exchange for money, the majority of scholars hold that the waiting period is the same as that of a divorced woman. However, some scholars believe it is one menstrual cycle for a menstruating woman, or one month for a woman who does not menstruate.
