What is the ruling on a husband preventing his wife from completing her university studies in her final year and severing her ties with her friends, in order to prevent the mixing that existed before marriage?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

If the studies involve unlawful mixing (of sexes), the husband must prevent his wife from completing her studies if preventing her from mixing is not possible otherwise. This is because the husband is a qawwam (protector and maintainer) who obligates his wife to fulfill the rights of Allah and restrains her from corruption. However, if it is possible to complete the studies without temptation or unlawful mixing, then he should not prevent her. And if she stipulated in the marriage contract that she completes her studies, he is obligated to fulfill this condition.
