And persecution is worse than killing." And they will not cease fighting you until they turn you back from your religion if they are able. And whoever among you apostatizes from his religion and dies while he is a disbeliever—for those, their deeds have become worthless in this world and the Hereafter, and those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide therein eternally (217))?

The verse is an initial new beginning and an answer to people's question about fighting in the sacred month. 4. The definite article for "the sacred month" is for generic reference, and the indefinite "fighting" is for generality. 5. The explicit mention of the word "fighting" in the answer emphasizes that it is what is great, not the sacred month. 6. The absence of the definite article for the word "fighting" in the answer is due to the presence of the unifying description ("therein"). 7. The answer is a legislation for Muslims and a silencing of the polytheists. 8. The comparative form in “greater” indicates the magnitude of the sin. 9. The arrangement of the words in the verse “but preventing [others] from the way of Allah and disbelief in Him and [preventing access to] the Sacred Mosque and expelling its people therefrom are greater in the sight of Allah” came to prioritize what is more important, which is disbelief in Allah. 10. The sentence “And they will continue to fight you until they turn you back from your religion, if they are able” is an parenthetical clause indicating the improbability of the polytheists being able to turn Muslims away from their religion. 11. His saying: “And those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide therein eternally” indicates the consequence of the invalidation of deeds and eternal residence in the Fire for disbelief.
