Was the verse, "And on the day of Hunain, when your great number pleased you," revealed concerning the Companions or concerning the idolaters?
The aforementioned verse was revealed concerning the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) on the day of Hunayn, when they were impressed by their large numbers, and some of them said, "We will not be defeated today due to scarcity." So, Allah revealed the verse, clarifying to them that victory comes from Him, not from numbers, as stated in His Almighty قول: "Indeed, Allah has given you victory in many battlefields and on the Day of Hunayn, when you were impressed by your great number, but it availed you nothing, and the earth became constrained for you, vast as it is, then you turned your backs in retreat. Then Allah sent down His tranquility upon His Messenger and upon the believers and sent down armies that you did not see and punished those who disbelieved. And that is the recompense of the disbelievers" and His saying: "How many a small company has overcome a large company by permission of Allah. And Allah is with the patient."
