Is it obligatory to repeat the prayers after discovering a tear the size of a fingertip in a sock that was thought to be covering?
If the tear in the khuff (leather slipper) or sock is above the anklebone, it does not matter, and one may wipe over it. However, if the tear is at or below the anklebone, jurists have differed. The (school of thought) of Ahmad and one of the two opinions of Al-Shafi'i hold that it is not permissible to wipe over them. The madhhab of Abu Hanifa permits wiping if the tear is less than the size of three fingers. The madhhab of Malik permits it as long as the tear does not reach one-third of the garment.
The more preponderant opinion is the permissibility of wiping over torn khuff or socks if the tear is minor. A tear the size of a fingerprint is considered minor. There is no obligation to repeat prayers that were performed with such a tear.
