What is the ruling on abandoning one's wife and children due to the wife's stubbornness, her hatred for the husband's family, and her excessive demands, as opposed to continuing a life of incessant problems?
It is advisable to be patient with one's wife and treat her kindly and with beneficence, and not to contemplate divorce. Islamic law encourages retaining one's wife even if one dislikes her, as Allah Almighty says: "And live with them in kindness. For if you dislike them - perhaps you dislike a thing and Allah makes therein much good." This is also due to the negative consequences of divorce. Children are a trust that must be preserved and raised, as Allah Almighty says: "Allah instructs you concerning your children." If the wife is disobedient (nashiz), the Quranic guidance for dealing with her should be followed. If she does not respond and persists in her stubbornness, it is permissible to restrain her to make her ransom herself, as Allah Almighty says: "And do not constrain them in order to take away part of what you gave them, unless they commit a clear immorality."
