Is it permissible to hear obscene words from the wife during intercourse, and is this what is meant by "rafath"?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Obscene language between spouses concerning intercourse and their descriptions of each other are permissible; this falls under the category of rafath (sexual talk) which is forbidden during the state of ihram. As for words of cursing and insults, they are impermissible obscenities, whether during intercourse or at other times, because Allah detests the obscene and vulgar person who says and does ugly things. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "The believer is not a slanderer, nor obscene, nor vulgar." He also said: "Nothing is heavier in the balance of a believer on the Day of Resurrection than good character, and indeed Allah detests the obscene and vulgar."
