Must I tell my husband about all my conversations with my family and others, especially if he claims that my mother's words could lead to the ruin of the home, or else disputes will arise between us?
The husband must fear Allah and abandon his request for gossip from his wife. Doing so is a sin, and it is impermissible for the wife to obey him in this matter. Backbiting (namimah) is a major sin and causes corruption, estrangement, and hatred. It has been forbidden by the Qur’an and the Sunnah. It is not proper for the husband to harbor ill suspicions about people or to ask his wife to relay information about her family, as this would make her a backbiter.
Whoever is informed of backbiting must not believe it, should advise the one who conveyed it, hate it for the sake of Allah, not harbor ill suspicions about his brother, not spy, and not convey the backbiting himself. The husband should occupy himself with rectifying his own shortcomings instead of spying on people. If he insists on his request, it is not permissible for the wife to comply. Instead, she can say kind words that spread love and extinguish the fire of discord.
