The preponderant opinion is that the Udhiyah (sacrifice) is a confirmed Sunnah, not obligatory. This is the view of the majority of jurists. The Hanafis, however, are of the opinion that it is obligatory. Many of those who hold it not to be obligatory consider it reprehensible to neglect it when one is able to perform it. The criterion for ability is the presence of ample means and financial ease, such that one does not fall into hardship or distress if he performs the sacrifice.
