What is the ruling on weeping upon hearing stories of the Prophet's (peace be upon him) persecution by the polytheists, yet not weeping upon hearing the Qur’an?
Crying out of emotion for what befell the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, or upon hearing the Qur’an and its recitation, is a good thing. Allah has praised those who weep upon hearing His verses. This is achieved by reflecting upon the meanings of the verses, including the reward of the obedient and the punishment of the disobedient, and the attributes and majesty of Allah, which instills longing, fear, and love. Striving against the self to attain this will lead to it, by Allah’s will, and this earnestness necessitates a great reward.
