What is the ruling on selling lyrics of songs predominantly characterized by love and infatuation, knowing that the seller intends to repent after achieving financial self-sufficiency from this work, and claiming an inability to compose lyrics for Islamic anthems?

Romantic poetry (ghazal) is permissible under the following conditions: that it does not flirt with a specific woman, that it does not describe intimate body parts, that it does not flirt with an effeminate boy, and that it does not contain forbidden speech. Poetry is like speech: its good is like its good, and its bad is like its bad. It is necessary for understanding the language and for using as evidence in exegesis (Tafsir (definition)) and the Sunnah (definition). However, poetry that includes slandering Muslims or flirting excessively with a specific woman and over-describing her is forbidden.

Selling romantic poetry to someone who sings it is permissible, provided that the singing of it does not involve anything forbidden. Thus, it is stipulated that the singing should be without musical instruments, except for the daff (tambourine), that the singer not be a woman, and that it does not lead to temptation.

The poet is advised to use his poetry in service of his religion, such as calling to good morals and virtues, encouraging noble deeds, and composing poems for Islamic anthems.
