Were all those who lived in the pre-Islamic era polytheists?

Believing what the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, reported about the state of his parents is not a lack of respect; rather, it is an obligation. If their state is mentioned to establish a matter, there is no harm, as in the case of Abraham's father, peace be upon him. The Prophet's prohibition against seeking forgiveness for his mother was because she was among the people of Hellfire, not because his status was greater than seeking forgiveness, as evidenced by the Hadith: "I asked my Lord, the Almighty, for permission to seek forgiveness for my mother, but He did not grant it to me. So my eyes shed tears out of mercy for her from the Fire." Anyone who lived during the جاهلية (pre-Islamic era of ignorance) and for whom there is evidence that they are in Hellfire is not among the Hanafis (monotheists) or the people of the fatrah (interval period). Christians are disbelievers according to the Quranic text: "Certainly, disbelieved are those who say, 'Allah is the third of three.'" As for whoever was on the religion of Jesus, peace be upon him, before the advent of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, they are Muslims.
