How is the Hadith, "Gold for gold, silver for silver... like for like, measure for measure, hand to hand" practically applied, and what is the rationale behind exchanging one commodity for another that is exactly identical to it?

The Hadith does not stipulate the exchange of dates with the same type of dates, but rather with the same measure (kil), as long as the genus is one. This is based on the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) saying: “And dates for dates… like for like, hand to hand.” Dates are a genus that includes various types such as Ajwa and Barhi. It is permissible to exchange one type of date for another with the same measure if you desire a different type, such as exchanging "Khalas" dates for "Ajwa" dates, provided that there is equality in measure and immediate possession (hand to hand) at the time of the contract. The same ruling applies to gold and silver, where exchange is permissible provided there is likeness.
