A religious man married a woman who does not maintain her prayers despite his advice. He divorced her but took her back for the sake of their children. He asks: Should he be patient with her? What are his duties toward her? Is he sinful for being intimate with her?

"Praise be to Allah.

A husband must command his wife with good and forbid her from evil, and among the greatest of good is performing prayer on time. If the wife never prays at all, she should not be kept because she is not a Muslim, and he must explain to her that her insistence on leaving prayer means she is not his wife. As for if she sometimes prays and sometimes neglects prayer, she does not leave Islam because of that, but he should advise her gently and kindly, clarifying the greatness and importance of prayer, and seek the reasons for her shortcomings to address them, encouraging her towards obedience and connecting her with righteous women."
