What is the supplication upon rainfall and seeing lightning and thunder, and what is the hadith indicating that supplication is answered at the time of rainfall?
When the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, saw rain, he would say: «O Allah, [make it] a beneficial downpour.» It is recommended to expose oneself to the rain, as it is authentically reported from Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, uncovered his garment so that the rain would fall on him and said: «Because it is freshly from its Lord Almighty.» If the rain became heavy, he would say: «O Allah, [send it] around us and not upon us.» As for hearing thunder, Abdullah ibn Az-Zubayr would stop speaking and say: ﴿Glorified is He whom the thunder glorifies with His praise, and the angels [glorify] from fear of Him﴾ [Ar-Ra'd: 13]. Then he would say: "Indeed, this is a severe warning to the people of the earth." Nothing has been authentically reported from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, regarding this. The time of rainfall is among the times when supplications are answered, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: «Two [supplications] are not rejected: supplication at the time of the call [to prayer], and under the rain.»
