Is the major expiation (kaffarah kubra) obligatory for one who intentionally ejaculated during a Ramadan daytime without intercourse?

Scholars differed concerning one who intentionally breaks their fast in Ramadan without intercourse, whether expiation (kaffarah) is due upon them or not. The majority held that no expiation is due upon them, because the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, did not command expiation for anyone other than the one who engaged in intercourse, and due to the hadith of Abu Hurairah: "Whoever intentionally vomits must make up that day." The Malikis held that expiation is obligatory for one who breaks their fast in Ramadan by nullifying the intention, or by eating, drinking, or masturbating, citing the hadith of Abu Hurairah in the Muwatta’. The majority responded that in the Two Sahihs (Bukhari and Muslim), this man broke his fast by engaging in intercourse. As for intentionally discharging semen during the daytime in Ramadan, it invalidates the fast and one must make up that day.
