Is it permissible for a Muslim woman to marry a disbeliever, and is the prohibition of this marriage a matter of Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic ignorance)?

The marriage of a Muslim woman to a disbeliever (kafir) is forbidden by the consensus of the scholars, whether the disbeliever is an idolater, a Jew, or a Christian. This prohibition has been in effect since the revelation of the verse: (Then if you ascertain that they are believers, do not return them to the disbelievers; they are not lawful [wives] for them, nor are they lawful [husbands] for them). The Ummah has unanimously agreed on the prohibition of a Muslim woman marrying a non-Muslim, and whoever does so is considered an adulteress, even if she calls her act marriage.
