Is it obligatory to sell an inherited piece of land, saved for life circumstances such as marriage or medical treatment, in order to perform the Hajj pilgrimage?
Hajj is an obligation upon the one who is able, and ability includes physical and financial capability, meaning that one possesses the full expenses for Hajj, round trip. These expenses must be in excess of one's basic needs and the needs of those one supports, such as food, drink, housing, and transportation. If the land is not cultivated or rented out for a livelihood, and it is not for repaying a debt, then it is in excess of one's needs and must be sold for Hajj. The intention to marry off a son or for medical treatment is not considered an excuse to forgo Hajj. One must rely on Allah and perform the obligation, for Hajj and Umrah eliminate poverty and sins. The one who spends will be compensated by Allah, and the one who withholds will have his wealth destroyed.
