What is the ruling of the Shari'ah concerning a husband and wife, one of whom has forbidden the other to himself for this world and the Hereafter, and one of them has placed his hand on the Qur'an? And does this constitute a prohibition between them?

Marital disputes require wisdom and gentleness in handling. An error made by one of the spouses, especially if it is like what was mentioned from the wife regarding the husband and his family, necessitates calm discussion to resolve the problem and prevent its recurrence. As for the husband's declaration of his wife as forbidden, there is a difference of opinion among scholars as to whether it constitutes a major irrevocability (baynunah kubra), or ẓihār, or requires an expiation for breaking an oath (kaffārat yamīn). The preponderant opinion is that it is ẓihār, and its repetition before expiation necessitates only one expiation. This is the view of the majority of scholars, in contrast to the Shafi'is who hold that the expiation multiplies with the repetition of the ẓihār pronouncement, unless it is uttered consecutively.
