Is it reported that some of the Salaf did not differentiate between good news and bad news, based on Allah's saying: "And perhaps you dislike a thing and it is good for you; and perhaps you love a thing and it is bad for you"?

Some of the early Muslims (Salaf) are reported to have shown complete contentment with God's decree. Among these are the words of Ibn Mas'ud: "I do not care, when I return to my family, in what state I see them, whether in ease or in hardship. And I have never woken up in a state wishing I were in another." Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz said: "I have no desire in matters except for where God Almighty has decreed them," and "I have never been in a state of worldly affairs such that it pleased me to be in another." Ibrahim ibn Dawud narrated from some wise men that "God has servants who receive calamities with cheerfulness; those are the ones whose hearts have been purified from worldly attachments." Abu Uthman al-Hiri also said: "For forty years, God has not placed me in a situation that I disliked, nor has He moved me to another that I resented."
