Is it permissible for a woman, whether she wears a niqab or not, to suffice with a short khimar that does not cover the chest and buttocks, or must she wear a long, opaque khimar or a long outer garment (idna') that covers the chest and buttocks, or an isdal or a milhafah that covers her entire body?

The obligatory and sufficient measure for a Muslim woman's attire is that it covers her entire body, without describing the size of her limbs or being transparent. Her entire body is awrah (private, to be covered). The fulfillment of this Islamic objective varies according to the nature of the woman's body and her clothing; the focus is on achieving concealment. Some scholars have held that covering the face is obligatory, especially in these later times, in order to prevent fitnah (temptation/strife).
