What should you do if you discover flaws in your fiancé that make him unsuitable for you and not helpful in your obedience to Allah, and with every attempt to break off the engagement and seek Allah's guidance through Istikhara, difficulties arise? And if you break off the engagement, would you be disobedient to Allah for choosing something other than what He chose for you? And is it necessary to abandon reason to obey Allah?
If it becomes apparent that the suitor has unbearable flaws, there is no harm in breaking off the engagement. It is preferable to perform Istikhara (prayer for guidance) before doing so. Istikhara does not negate reason; rather, it complements it, for Allah knows what is hidden, be it good or bad. If you perform Istikhara regarding breaking off the engagement, then proceed with it. If it is made easy, then it is good. If it is made difficult, then perhaps there is no good in it for you at this time. Istikhara is not performed for what is obligatory, forbidden, or disliked. The issue of ease or difficulty might be subject to doubt, so one should proceed cautiously. One who goes against the outcome of Istikhara is not disobedient, but they might miss out on much good. The perfection of faith lies in entrusting the matter to Allah and being content with His decree after performing Istikhara.
