Were the gatherings of remembrance (dhikr) that included reading a book of invocations for the Shadhili tariqa, reciting the Quran, chanting (inshad), and a sermon by the shaykh, where the voices of men could be heard from a nearby place via microphones, present during the time of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him? And were there any among them who were moved by chanting or dhikr to the point of screaming at that time?

The sessions of sama' (listening), which include melodious verses and beating the duff (tambourine) or similar instruments, were not present during the time of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. Seeking closeness to Allah through them is among the innovations in religion. Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah mentioned that the sama' legislated by Allah for His servants, upon which the predecessors of the Ummah agreed, is the listening to the verses of Allah. As for the gathering of righteous people, worshippers, and ascetics to listen to melodious verses accompanied by clapping or beating the duff, this was not legislated by the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. Therefore, it is advised not to attend these gatherings and to replace them with sessions of Islamic knowledge from the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him.
