All prophets, without exception, herded sheep, as narrated by Al-Bukhari from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: "Allah has not sent a prophet except that he herded sheep." His Companions asked, "Even you?" He replied, "Yes, I used to herd them for the people of Makkah for a few Qirat."

The wisdom behind the prophets herding sheep lies in training them to shepherd their nations, and to learn patience, forbearance, compassion, and the management of differing temperaments. By herding sheep, they train themselves to be patient with their dispersion and weakness, and to deal with their enemies. This qualifies them to lead nations with gentleness and wisdom, and makes their enduring the hardship of conveying the message easier.
