If menstrual blood appears before fifteen days have passed since the start of the first bleeding, there are two opinions regarding the intervening period of purity: it is menstruation that must be made up, or it is a period of purity during which prayer and fasting are valid, provided that the total duration of blood and purity does not exceed 15 days. If the total duration of blood and purity exceeds 15 days, then the reference is to distinguishing between menstrual blood and other blood, or directly to the woman's customary period.
