What is the interpretation of verse 227 of Surat Ash-Shu'ara?

The Almighty's saying: (Except for those who believe and do righteous deeds and remember Allah much and champion themselves after they have been wronged. And those who do wrong are going to know to what [kind of] return they will be returned) is an exception for the believing poets who champion their religion and defend their Messenger from the dispraised poets. This verse includes Muslim poets like Hassan ibn Thabit and those who shared their characteristics, who used their poetry to proclaim the oneness of Allah, praise Him, and defend the Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, and who responded to the polytheists' satire against the Muslims. And Allah has promised severe torment in the Hereafter for the wrongdoers, meaning those who transgress against people or rights. Thus, the verse contains a promise for the believers and a warning for the disbelievers.
