It is forbidden to propose after another proposal has been accepted. There is a consensus on the prohibition of proposing after the mature woman or the guardian of a minor girl has given her consent. It is disliked to break off an engagement without a legitimate religious reason. It is advisable to maintain the engagement if the first suitor is a man of good character and religious commitment. If discord and separation are feared, it is better to break off the engagement. The suitor may retrieve his gifts if the marriage has not been consummated. After the engagement is broken off, the brother's friend may propose, but it is not advisable to rush into agreement. Rather, one should inquire about him and verify his religious commitment and character, and then perform the Istikhara prayer.
