If you desire to marry a girl, inquire about her from trustworthy individuals regarding her religiosity and character. Seek Allah's guidance (perform Istikhara) before proposing to her, for married life is long and fraught with challenges. Prayer is the pillar of the religion, and abandoning it is a great sin, even if due to laziness. Some scholars are of the opinion that one who abandons prayer is a disbeliever. This girl is influenced by her parents' environment, as they do not pray. Do not marry her until she repents and establishes her prayers, for there is no good in a woman who abandons prayer. Breaking off an engagement is easier than completing a marriage, thereby losing your religion and your worldly life. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Three supplicate but are not answered: a man who has a ill-tempered wife and does not divorce her."
