Are there abrogated Ahadith?

The Ummah has unanimously agreed on the permissibility of abrogation (naskh), whether it be the abrogation of the Qur'an or the Hadith. Abrogation is the removal of a Sharia ruling by a later one. Examples of abrogated hadiths include Mu'awiyah's hadith: "Whoever drinks alcohol, flog him; if he repeats it a fourth time, kill him." Scholars have unanimously agreed on its abrogation, stating that a drinker of alcohol is only to be punished by flogging. Another example is the Prophet's saying (peace be upon him): "I had forbidden you from visiting graves, but now visit them." This also includes the abrogation of the permissibility of temporary marriage (mut'ah), as the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "I had permitted you to engage in temporary marriage with women, but indeed Allah has forbidden that until the Day of Judgment."
