What is the ruling on shortening and combining prayers for a student traveling from Al-Qassim to Hail, where he stays for four days and then returns?
It is permissible for the traveler to shorten and combine prayers if their journey is lawful and its distance is not less than 83 kilometers, calculated after passing all the houses of their village until the beginning of the houses of the destination village. The traveler remains under the ruling of a traveler until they return or intend to reside for four days, not counting the days of arrival and departure. Therefore, whoever goes to work on Monday morning and returns on Thursday afternoon is considered a traveler while at work, and it is permissible for them to shorten and combine prayers, because they do not reside for a period that would terminate the ruling of travel (four days excluding the days of arrival and departure). Shortening the four-rak'ah prayers is sunnah, and it is better than not doing so. As for combining prayers, it is permissible to do so either by advancing or delaying them.
