What should a girl do who suffers from irregular menstruation, and whose menstrual period exceeded 20 days, and she performed ghusl, prayed, and fasted, considering the excess as istihada (non-menstrual vaginal bleeding), and then her second period approached? Should she fast the entire Ramadan and make up for the duration of what she used to experience before?
Since the duration of menstruation has exceeded fifteen days, the woman is considered to be in a state of istihadah (non-menstrual bleeding). If she does not have a known regular period, she should rely on discernible characteristics. Whatever has the color, odor, and pain of menstruation is considered menses, after the cessation of which she performs ghusl (ritual bath), prays, and fasts. Anything else is istihadah. If she does not have discernible characteristics, she should consider herself menstruating for six or seven days, based on investigation, then perform ghusl after their expiry. Any bleeding beyond that is istihadah, during which she fasts, prays, and performs wudu (ablution) for the time of each prayer, taking precautions.
