Is it forbidden to sell a backgammon board without the dice?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

If you know or strongly believe that the buyer will use the backgammon table for unlawful games, then it is not permissible to sell it to him, because it constitutes aiding in sin, in accordance with the Almighty's saying: "And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression." However, if you know or strongly believe that he will use it for permissible purposes, then there is no harm in selling it. If the probabilities are equal, then piety and avoiding what is doubtful are more appropriate, according to the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "Leave what makes you doubt for what does not make you doubt," and his saying: "Indeed, the lawful is clear, and the unlawful is clear, and between them are doubtful matters."
