How can one legitimately get rid of ants spreading in the house, after previous attempts have failed?

If ants cause harm to the house, people, or belongings, one should try to get rid of them by any means that do not involve killing them. However, if there is no way to eliminate them except by killing them, then there is no blame in doing so.
