What is the ruling on renting shops to tobacco and cigarette vendors?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

It is not permissible to rent a shop to someone who sells prohibited items in it, such as tobacco; because it is cooperation in sin and aggression. Allah the Almighty said: "And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression." Scholars have explicitly stated the prohibition of this, for "the wage for performing something unlawful is unlawful." Examples of this include renting shops to barbers who shave beards, renting shops to usurious banks, and renting shops to those who sell lewd or ideologically corrupting magazines. "Indeed, when Allah prohibits something, He also prohibits its price."
