What should I do about my beard which has grown on one side but not the other after the barber shaved half of it with a razor? And should I take the barber’s advice, who told me to shave both sides with a razor until they match, or should I significantly trim the left side to make it like the right?

The texts of the Sunnah command the growing and lengthening of the beard. The majority of scholars prohibit shaving it, and some of them forbid taking anything less than a fistful.

If it is possible to make the sides of the beard even by taking what exceeds a fistful, then there is no harm. If that is not sufficient, then do not take more from the beard, unless leaving it as it is would cause disfigurement leading to embarrassment and psychological distress. In that case, it is permissible to take from it according to the view that allows trimming what is less than a fistful, provided it does not reach the throat, especially since many scholars have permitted acting upon the less preferred opinion when there is a need.
