Is the deceased to be washed first with water and lote-tree leaves (sidr), then the camphor placed dry in the last wash, or is the camphor to be placed with water in the last wash? And is it true that placing camphor without water does not purify the deceased?

It is recommended that the first washing be with water and lotus (sidr), and the last washing with camphor, as stated in the Hadith of Umm Atiyyah. The majority of scholars hold that lotus and camphor remove the purity of water, and therefore, washing must be done with pure water. Thus, a washing with lotus or camphor is not counted among the three washings; rather, only a washing with pure water is counted. The Hanafis and some Hanbalis are of the view that adding lotus or camphor to water does not remove its purity.
