The question

How can one deal with a difficult and moody father, especially after his illness, given that he refuses proper care, gets angry at the slightest things, and wants his children constantly by his side at the expense of their studies and social lives? And what is the just course of action regarding the division of inheritance among the children, especially with the disparity in gifts previously given by the father to each of them, and what about the sisters' right to inheritance?

The answer

The father has a great right over his children, and Allah has coupled his right with His own right, and his right becomes greater as he advances in age. It is obligatory for the child to stay with his sick father and to be patient with his actions and requests. Part of righteousness is to respond to his father and to refrain from traveling if he disapproves of his travel. Scholars have stated that a father has the right to prevent his child from traveling for an act of obedience, so the child should not travel except with his father's permission.

As for justice in giving gifts, it means that the father should equalize between his male and female children in the gift, and the preponderant opinion is to equalize between males and females in it. If the father is just in giving gifts among them, and then the value of what was given to some of them increases, this does not negate justice.
