Is the dutiful relationship and honoring of parents, whether they be polytheists or dissolute, wicked Muslims, obligatory by consensus, or is the matter disputed, and what is the interpretation of Sa'id ibn Al-Musayyib abandoning his father?

Scholars are unanimous regarding the obligation of honoring one's parents. There is no difference in this between a righteous parent and a disobedient one, and even if they were polytheists, for rights are not forfeited by disobedience or disbelief. However, some scholars permitted boycotting a disobedient parent if the boycott is a means to reform them. As for Sa'id ibn al-Musayyab's boycott of his father, which Ibn Qutaybah mentioned, it is an inauthentic report. Regarding a disbelieving parent, some scholars held that their right to honor is not like that of a Muslim, so obedience to them is not obligatory in everything, especially what contradicts obedience to Allah.
