The answer

Mu'awiyah ibn Abi Sufyan met the Prophet (peace be upon him) through their common ancestor 'Abd Manaf, four generations removed. He is considered among those who embraced Islam during the Conquest of Mecca. He had embraced Islam before his father, at the time of the 'Umrah of Qada', but his conversion was not openly manifested until the day of the Conquest. He narrated traditions from the Prophet (peace be upon him) and a number of companions, and many companions and Tabi'un narrated from him. He used to write for the Prophet (peace be upon him), and he governed Syria for twenty years. Then he assumed the Caliphate for twenty years. He passed away in the year 60 AH.
