Will Allah forgive one who has been overtaken by whispers of polytheism to the extent of despair and suicidal thoughts, knowing that they previously suffered from obsessive whispers concerning the essence of Allah?

A servant is not held accountable for intrusive thoughts and whispers unless they become firmly held beliefs and intentions. Furthermore, he is rewarded for disliking them, as this is a sign of sound faith. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "That is pure faith," when he was asked about the presence of thoughts that one would deem too grave to utter. Allah has forgiven this nation for the whispers in their hearts, as long as they do not act upon them or speak of them. The effective cure for obsessive whispers is to completely disregard them, to believe that they are satanic thoughts, and to fight them. A Muslim is rewarded for this as one who strives in Allah's cause. One must fear Allah and strive against the self by cutting off these thoughts, for yielding to them leads to confusion, doubt, and distress.
