Question: What is the ruling on leaving a fire in the house when going to sleep and leaving it unattended?

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade leaving fire in homes while sleeping, as stated in the hadiths of Abdullah ibn Umar and Abu Musa al-Ash'ari, may Allah be pleased with them both. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, explained this command by stating that fire is an enemy, and that the "little mischievous one" (the mouse) might ignite a fire upon the household. Imam An-Nawawi mentioned that this prohibition is general, encompassing the fire of a lamp and other forms of fire. He added that suspended lanterns in mosques and similar places, if there is a fear of fire from them, fall under the command to extinguish them. Otherwise, there is no harm in them, as the cause for concern is absent.
