Is it permissible to break off an engagement due to psychological incompatibility, knowing there is an intention to propose to another woman who was previously desired?
An engagement is a promise of marriage that should be fulfilled as long as the girl maintains good character and religious commitment, and there are no objections to her character or faith. However, if you sense a lack of psychological compatibility and discomfort, and you fear that you will not be able to live together harmoniously, then there is no harm in breaking off the engagement. There is no objection to proposing to a divorced woman after her (waiting period) has expired, or to any other woman, if she is religious, for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "A woman is married for four reasons: for her wealth, for her lineage, for her beauty, and for her religion. So, succeed with the religious woman, and may your hands be dusted [with good fortune]."
